A Comprehensive Analysis of Strategies to Mitigate Corrosion in the Oil & Gas Industry

Cost and availability the key to managing corrosion free topsides

Hilman Mohammed Saleh, Corrosion & Integrity Engineer for Corrosion Management & Inspection Framework for Topsides at BW Offshore, discusses corrosion management and inspection framework challenges with us, “Cost and availability - There needs to be a balance and compromise when it comes to material selection. The best material is often too expensive and often not available in certain parts of the world. Life cycle of the unit - often, materials are chosen that will satisfy the required life cycle of the unit. However, these days more life extension projects of existing units are on-going. Therefore, new design should look into a longer life cycle than the typical 15 – 20 years.”

He also outlines the strategies to ensure corrosion free topsides, such as basis of design – fluid properties, technology available, and more.

Some facts that cannot be overlooked:

  • The total annual cost of corrosion in the oil and gas production industry alone is estimated to be $1.372 billion, broken down into $589 million in surface pipeline and facility costs, $463 million annually in downhole tubing expenses, and another $320 million in capital expenditures related to corrosion
  • Many international studies (in Europe and North America) estimate that annual corrosion costs range from approximately 1 to 5% of the Gross National Product (GNP) of each nation

** - The above facts are based out of a corrosion cost report for E & P by GREGORY R. RUSCHAU, PH.D AND MOHAMMED A. AL-ANEZI
